On October 13, 1923, Dorothy Lee Bolden was born in Atlanta, Georgia. From the late 1940s, Mrs. Bolden became an advocate for domestic workers. In 1968, she founded the National Domestic Workers Union of America, a predecessor to the National Domestic Workers Alliance. In addition to her work resulting in a 33% increase in wages in Atlanta, Mrs. Bolden held strong influence over state and municipal electoral politics for Black Georgians.
Each year, on her birthday, we honor Dorothy Bolden for her contribution to the domestic worker rights movement with a celebration of Domestic Worker Day. This year, in addition to celebrating Dorothy Bolden and the NDWUA, we are celebrating 10 years of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and 5 years of the Atlanta chapter. We hope that you join us for this amazing event. The celebration is free, so put on your fanciest clothes, grab your whole family and celebrate with us!
